You Are Probably Iodine Deficient and at Risk!

Expert book on IodineWhen a study was done of British schoolgirls in 2011 70% were found to be Iodine deficient.

And this is not in the Third World mind you, but in modern Britain!

This is not really surprising once you realise what Iodine is and how it works.  Mostly known as a disinfectant to be wiped onto cuts and skin damage it is one of the most important minerals for our health.

Iodine is a mineral found in the soil.

We need it for the health of our thyroid gland and we expect to get it by eating food grown in soil that has Iodine.

However it is difficult to find enough Iodine in the soil in any region of the World where glaciation occurred.

When the glaciers retreated they took with them a lot of top soil and in that was the Iodine.

And if Iodine is not in the soil it cannot be in the crop or the plant. iodine is found in fish and in seaweed but both are polluted by mercury and other heavy metals and pollutants.

This is a cast iron reason for taking a health boosting supplement.

Goitre is the disease most people connect with Iodine deficiency. It is a swelling of the thyroid gland in the neck as it tries valiantly to work extra hard to try to compensate for the low level of Iodine.

All we need to avoid getting goitre is the microscopic dose of around 150 micrograms a day. Not milligrams, mind you just a few micrograms.

At such low levels infants are born with severe retardation and an IQ that is about 60% of the average. This is called cretinism. In regions with severe Iodine deficiency 5 to 15% of the population will be affected according to the World Health Organisation.

Other severe effects are stillbirth and spontaneous abortion.

Enough Iodine Deficit damage already – how do we correct all this?

Multi-vitamin tablets, better called Multi-mineral tablets will often have a bare minimum amount Iodine, often around 150 micrograms and while this is enough to stop goitre it is not enough to be in good health.

Iodoral - a recommended Iodine supplement

An iodine supplement called Iodoral is strongly recommended by several experts as a good way to boost your Iodine levels. The dose per tablet is 12.5 mg which is quite a high Iodine dose and may be too much for daily and perpetual use.

Best advice on this is to take it for a few days and see how you feel, then finish the month and stop taking the Iodine.  Then resume if you feel you need to.If in any doubt get your blood levels checked for thyroid hormones TSH,T3 AND T4 as well.

Low energy is not always due to the thyroid – your adrenals could be exhausted and your thyroid may be over compensating for that.

In that case, helping your adrenals would "cure" your thyroid!

In all cases of hormone disorders in any of the glands – thyroid, adrenal or gonads it is essential to take a whole body approach if you want a real solution.

As usual in cases of low energy a gentle detox may help to get toxins such as heavy metals out of the body. Some of the toxins may be poisoning the thyroid and not allowing it to run the body metabolism properly. A detox good enough to remove heavy metals is not accomplished overnight but will take several months – whatever celebrity detox gurus will tell you, toxins cannot be "flushed out of the body" with pure water – you need special health boosting nutrients to work their perfectly scientific magic.

With a detoxed thyroid there will be less inflammation in the body and less cause to trigger anti-bodies to the thyroid itself.

A balanced program of a mainly organic diet will help keep your thyroid calm and supported and allow it to generate all the energy you want to have a healthy energetic lifestyle.

I love learning and being healthy so as soon as I came across Yoga, read and practised to get the health benefits. When I was approaching middle age my health declined under the onslaught o stress and possibly poor diet, I had a perfect opportunity to learn more and I qualified in both Osteopathy and Naturopathy. Our health really is in our own hands and not in the hands of "The Doctor" or our Genes :-)
